The Network Systems Consultant has primary responsibility for
providing IT support and customer service to a variety of customers
within an assigned territory. Day-to-day activities include
heavy interaction with end-users in a variety of computing environments.
Minimum Technical Prerequisites
NOS Client Ability
Candidates must have solid, reliable knowledge and experience
in a Network Operating System that is in demand by current customers.
Applicable NOS currently include:
・Windows NT/2003
・NetWare
・UNIX/LINUX
- Installation, configuration and troubleshooting clients
of an applicable NOS
- Configure file, print and remote access services on clients
of an applicable NOS
- Basic NOS administration, including add/remove users and
groups, configure file permissions, check event logs
- Checking backup logs from ArcServe or Backup Exec for an
applicable NOS
Enterprise E-mail Ability
Candidates must have solid, reliable knowledge and experience
in an enterprise e-mail application that is in demand by current
customers. Applicable applications currently include:
・Exchange
・Notes
・GroupWise
・SendMail
- Installation, configuration and troubleshooting of clients,
including remote clients
- Basic administration of enterprise e-mail application, including
add/remove users and group, configure folder permissions if
applicable, forward mail to other accounts, and add aliases
Workstation Ability
Candidates must have solid, reliable knowledge and experience
in Windows 95 /98/NT/XP workstation:
- Windows troubleshooting and configuration
- Configuration of standard POP and SMTP clients including
Netscape, Eudora, Outlook Express and Outlook
- Installation, configuration, troubleshooting and customization
of MS Office Suite applications per customer's preferences
- Solid understanding of and ability to install, configure
and test workstation hardware including video cards, modems,
NICs, sound cards, hard drives, tape drives and other removable
media
Other Technical Knowledge
- Solid understanding of and ability to configure TCP/IP and
troubleshooting Internet connectivity
- Understanding of what hubs do
- Understanding of relationship between hubs, patch panels
and connecting offices to the network
- Understanding of what DNS servers do
Other Considerations
Critical skills and work habits include staying apprised of
technological developments, quality control, productivity, interpersonal
communication, customer service, responding with urgency to
customer requests. Key considerations include:
Maturity
- Ability and willingness to recognize when it is necessary
to ask for technical expertise from others
- Takes ownership of tasks and follows through to ensure
a smooth transition in handoffs
- Takes a personal interest in, and responsibility for,
quality of work they perform or are associated with
- Ability to pay close attention to detail while performing
technically detailed tasks
- Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations
- Some evening and weekend hours are necessary
Learning Ability
- Ability to quickly learn the basics of any Windows desktop
application not already known to them, through the use of
self-study materials
- Ability to share easy-to-understand technical explanations
about their own areas of expertise to others and a willingness
to contribute to troubleshooting dialog with other Consultants
Communication
- Adequate combination of product knowledge and technical
knowledge that makes it possible to determine what may or
may not be achieved
- Ability to articulate technical information clearly to
non-technical people
- Ability to communicate internal and external difficulties
effectively and to propose solutions in a constructive manner
- Excellent communication and innovative problem resolution
skills are necessary, as computer consultants and other
internal resources are frequently unavailable to meet as
a group during normal business hours
Technical Expertise
- NT Workstation installation and configuration experience
- Experience in other NOS's
- Work experience in multi-platform environments
- Strong DOS ability
